Baja SAE USB Project

The Baja SAE Series is an annual competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers and has the objective to encourage undergraduate students to design, manufacture and test and All-Terrain vehicle prototype. There are almost 100 participants and it was a good opportunity to put in practice the knowledge acquired in class. In 2010 we achieved the 1st place in design, it has been the highest achievement in the whole team’s history.

In 2010 I was elected as powertrain head and I led several tests in order to characterize the dynamical behavior of the vehicle. These developments settles a solid base for future generations.

As active member of the team and as Powertrain Head, some of the responsabilities encomended were:

  • Administrate the tasks entrusted to the transmission division, which includes the following steps: transmission system design (conceptual and mechanical design), construction and testing made in the prototype.

  • Human and financial resources management. To delegate tasks and track them to ensure project progress. Complementary use of Gantt charts to manage tasks and assign them the necessary resources.

  • Apply the knowledge of vehicle dynamics, needed to the selection of the transmission gear ratio and for performance optimization.

  • Design a gearbox composed by shafts, gears, and housing. Design the transmission support and other miscellaneous parts analyzing the strength of materials.

  • Familiarize with software used to computer design (CAD tools) and to strength analysis of the materials (Finite Element Analysis).

  • Development of basic skills with TIG and electrode welding. Use of machinery tools (lathes, milling machines, cutting, bending, etc.). Knowledge of industrial safety Standards.

  • Development of a Dyno for the characterization of the engine curve, used in BAJA SAE® competitions.

  • Development of testing protocol to study the dynamic behavior of the vehicle using experimental tests. Analyze and process data from the tests.
